Our first ski resort comparison: Squaw Valley, California vs. Snowbird, Utah


Depending on the season, it’s quite rare for ski resorts to remain open through the late spring, but there are a few that pride themselves on their long seasons each year where skiing in May is possible. Squaw Valley in California, USA and Snowbird in Utah, USA are just two of the roughly 15 ski resorts that currently remain open as of May 3rd, 2016, so we’ve decided to compare the resort stats.  Which one will you choose next season?

Skiing in May: Riksgransen, Sweden vs. Arapahoe Basin, Colorado, USA

Our second comparison is between Riksgransen in Northern Sweden and Arapahoe Basin in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Although on different continents, these two ski resorts are big Spring skiing resorts. With Riksgransan being the northernmost resort, it offers skiing through the night in the late Spring. Arapahoe Basin, on the other hand, allows skiers and boarders to enjoy some great skiing in May with it’s incredibly high elevation.

Skiing in May: Hintertux in Austria vs. Sunshine Village Resort in Canada

Hintertux, a glacier in Tyrol, Austria, is a 365 day ski resort offering skiing and riding through every season of the year. On the other hand, Sunshine Village is known for one the longest ski seasons in North America from October to early summer, with a chance of a powder skiing in May! (May 16th, 2016)

Skiing in May: Mammoth Mountain in California vs. Whistler Blackcomb in Canada

Our fourth comparison is between Mammoth Mountain near Lake Tahoe, California and one of North America’s most popular, Whistler Blackcomb. As of May 20th, Mammoth Mountain, the highest summit in California, remains open through Memorial Day weekend, while the Blackcomb glacier is planned to remain open through June 11th.

Skiing in May: Timberline Lodge in Oregon vs. Killington in Vermont

East coast and west coast skiing may have different reputations, but Vermont’s Killington has given the west coast’s ski resorts a run for their money, being the first ski resort to open in North America in 2016. While Timberline Lodge offers glacier skiing in May, Killington extends it’s season by giving skiers and boarders the opportunity to hike over to the famous Superstar trail through the late May and shred some great terrain.
