Craigieburn ski resort is located in Canterbury, New Zealand. With a peak elevation of 1,922m, it offers skiers and snowboarders a 615 m vertical drop. The ski area has around 400 hectares of skiable area, but Craigieburn ski resort is a gateway to many more acres of backcountry terrain.
At Craigieburn ski resort, you'll find a friendly club atmosphere and an environmentally responsible approach to skiing and snowboarding. It’s more like a full backcountry experience. You will enjoy a quality day of recreation rather than racking up vertical meters with the normal ski resort crowd. The mountain itself offers some of the easiest accessible advanced off piste skiing anywhere in the world. Moreover, the cozy slopeside accommodation is the seasonal home to a community of snow addicts from all over the globe.
Craigieburn ski resort has some of New Zealand's most challenging patrolled terrain. Of course, the ski area doesn’t have the luxury of a helicopter, but rather a fairly old school lift system. There are 3 rope-tows to transport skiers up steep pitches. The lifts are pretty fast, but the basic nature of them is great for keeping the crowds away. The major benefit, of course, is that there are more fresh tracks for those who are super keen (and super-fit).
In total Craigieburn ski resort offers 10 km of trails. 10% (1 km) of the total terrain ideal for beginners, 30% (3 km) suitable for intermediate skiers with 60% (6 km) for the more advanced and expert level skiers and snowboarders. This is all easily accessible with 3 ski old school lifts.
The terrain at Craigieburn ski resort is not for the faint-hearted or unfit. But is incredible for those who love some steep and relatively untouched terrain. The terrain varies from steep narrow chutes to wide open powder bowls. There is no grooming except for the grooming that Mother Nature performs, so the ski area is all “off-piste”. Long runs resemble heli-ski runs when there is fresh powder. Intermediates to advanced skiers have taken a liking to this terrain. But, a competent beginner with a determined attitude will learn a lot in a day.
Nestling amongst the native beach forests of the Craigieburn Forest Park, the area offers a lot during summers. Lodge hire is available for conferences or instructional activities, retreats, weddings, outdoor nature courses and competitive events. School or Scout groups, work groups, church groups, clubs and commercial organizations or even private groups also use it for event hosting.
