Kicking Horse ski resort is located 14km outside the logging town of Golden, in British Columbia, Canada. With the village at 1,190m (3,900ft) and mountain summit at 2,450m (8,033ft), yet it is most famous for the significant vertical drop of 1,260m, the 4th longest in North America.

Kicking Horse ski resort began as an idea after a visit to Whitetooth Ski Hill (the resort’s former name) by award-winning Vancouver architect Oberto Oberti in 1996. With immense support from the local town of Golden, as well as local and international investors, the resort was bought and redeveloped and opened in December 2000 under its new name of Kicking Horse ski resort.

Kicking Horse ski resort is for the purist. At its most extreme, the terrain is steep and complex – requiring a more technical response to the force of gravity. With 129 runs spread over more than 1,113 hectares (2,800ac), it offers a phenomenal variety of options, including plenty of terrain for the novice and intermediate skier and snowboarder. And there are also family-friendly features at the resort, such as a tube park and a skating rink.

Kicking Horse has built its reputation on its steep terrain and incredibly high annual snowfall; average 275in (700cm). Just because this mountain has awesome expert terrain, doesn’t mean that it’s not also suited to other levels of skiers and boarders. There’s enough terrain for beginners to improve their skills at the base of the mountain and there are plenty of runs for intermediates. The terrain breakdown is approximately 20% beginner trails, 35% intermediate and 45% for advanced skiers and snowboarders.

Skiing and snowboarding, mountain biking and alpine hiking are on offer at Kicking Horse ski resort, with 85 inbound chutes, before dropping 4,133ft of vertical into the giant chasm that is the Columbia River Valley. Cross-country skiing takes place on gentler gradients down below.
