The ski area at Mt Hotham ski resort is somewhat unique in that it’s mostly an “upside down” ski resort with the village, not at the base of the resort but closer to the top of the resort and you can ski down to the chairlifts for first run.
The village sits either side of the Great Alpine Road in the sub-alpine of the uppermost parts of the mountain. Lifts rise above the road whilst most of the runs drop down from the village. The flatness on the top is where the beginners’ runs are, and the runs get steeper and more advanced as they drop into the valleys.
In total Mt Hotham ski resort offers 35 km of trails with 20% (10 km) of the total terrain ideal for beginners, 40% (20 km) suitable for intermediate skiers and 40% (20 km) for the more advanced and expert level skiers and snowboarders. This is all easily accessible with 13 ski lifts. Cross-country skiing at Mt Hotham ski resort is very popular with 35km+ of groomed trails for varying abilities.
The ski area features good terrain for novices and intermediates, especially at the Orchard area. Whereas Mt Hotham tends to cater much better to strong intermediate riders rather than those wanting to ride “light blue” runs. Experts head to the double black slopes in the “Extreme Zone”. This area has a few cliffs, super steeps and tight trees.
Once you’ve exhausted yourself on the trails or need some indulgence there’s a day spa available. The après scene and nightlife is pretty good with options ranging from low-key hangouts to upscale après ski culture bars. One stand-out is The General which is a fabulous all-rounder for food, drinking, views and entertainment.
